Guests dancing at the holiday ball (1418 bytes)Welcome to the Holiday Manor Christmas Ball. You all look so wonderful this evening. We have a lot of things planned for your entertainment. There will be dancing, carol singing, the burning of the Yule log and a menu that will suit anyone's taste. So make ready your ball cards and prepare to escort your partner onto the dance floor, but before you do, here are some rules of etiquette. (You are listening to "The Minuet by Bocherini".)

Should you like to learn more about Victorian balls, please feel free to visit us at 1876 Victorian England Revisited.

A lady should not enter or cross the hall unattended.
Never lead a lady in the ball by the hand, always offer the arm.
A lady should always dance first with her escort, and afterwards he should see that she is provided with partners, although she may dance with whomever she chooses.
The lady's escort should conduct her to supper and will hold himself in readiness to escort her home whenever she desires to go.
No gentleman whose clothing or breath is tainted with alcohol or tobacco should ever enter the presence of ladies in the dancing room.
No gentleman should play the clown in the ballroom.  To do so classifies him as a "buffoon".
A gentleman in waltzing should not place his arm around a lady's waist until the dancing begins and should drop it when the music ceases.
No gentleman should use his bare hand to press the waist of a lady in the waltz.  If without gloves, he should carry a handkerchief in his hand.
A gentleman who goes to a ball should dance often; if he does not, he will not receive many invitations afterwards.   He is not there to decorate the wall and "wait for supper".
All ladies attending the ball should receive the privilege of dancing.
The orchestra will first play a march, then a quadrille, a waltz, a polka, a gallop, interspersed with several round dances and end with a march prior to supper.  After supper several dances will follow with the company dispersing.
If any lady is without an attendant, it is the duty of the lady of the house to see that she is provided with an escort.
No gentleman should ever presume upon the acquaintance of a lady after a ball.
Neither married nor unmarried ladies should leave a ballroom unattended.
